      "OPERA IN THE UNITED STATS - New York City - Interior of the Metropolitan Opera House, Tradicional home of American opera. The Auditorium, rebuilt in 1883 after a fire had damaged the original structure, seats some 3.700 people and has standing room for about 600 more. Its first tier of upper-level seats is known as "the diamond horseshoe". The "Met" first began radio broadcasts of its performances in 1931; televised opera was inaugurated in 1948. 62-6803".
